Why uncover access points?

There are a few reasons why I want to uncover access points. Initially the reasons were purely self-serving -- I want to have net access anywhere I go and wanted to have a solid list of APs that were reliable. But the more I think of it the more I wanted to send a warning to the IT community at large.

I feel that we've let loose a bit of a monster. This monster defeats any of the security measures most companies have taken to secure their LAN. While the IT shop secures the LAN with a VPN, firewalls of all kinds, on other security measures like SecurID, an ignorant department sets up 1 wireless AP without any kind of protection and effectively makes all of these security measures useless.

Welcome to the Wireless Bandit...

There are a lot of open wireless network access points in Toronto and the GTA. They are very useful when you just want to get on line quickly and inexpensively (free actually!). We make no guarantees about what kind of access you'll get once you are on.

If you look at the right under Access Points you'll see 2 categories:

CONFIRMED ACCESS POINTS (CAPs) - known, unprotected areas of access with full net access, just plug and play (note that sometimes outbound traffic like email may be restricted due to ISP restrictions)

UNCONFIRMED ACCESS POINTS (UAPs) - these are lists of wireless LANs that have been wardriven along the labeled path (Wardriving Vector, aka WDV).

I know, a GPS would help greatly... Get in touch and maybe I'll post GPS positions with these tables. It's up to all of us to figure out which points are "hot".
