A laptop with a WiFi card and the right software makes a pretty good wardriving tool. But how about a more portable solution?
How about using a Pocket PC instead? They're small and make a great tool for wardriving. But the added benefit is that they're much more suited for warwalking. Imagine walking a dowtown street or a shopping mall looking for access points with a laptop. It's a little bit cumbersome and not very discreet. Use a Pocket PC instead. Just turn on the pocket PC, run the software and put it back into it's carry case. Then all you have to do is listen for the telltale beeps when it detects access points. Use a set of headphones if you want. Then you just look like a regular person walking around listening to his/her walkman.
