Wow. This looks like a really interesting project. And useful too. If one could overlap the WB database with a regular map database you could pop this little app open, see where you are based on the existing database and then let it tell you where to get Internet access over wifi. Um yes. A little more of that please.

As usual, the reporter spazzes over the fact that there are many hotspots not realizing that many of these are not really for public consumption, unless of course you want to be pulled over for sitting in front of a house surfing the net. I know I have no interest on cruising down a street to get a net-fix.

2. Get a PC with 2 ethernet cards (I do not believe you need a hard drive *at all*)
3. Hook one up to a wifi router
4. Hook the other to broadband connection
5. Boot the PC off the PublicIP CD
6. Instant hotspot with filtering and all the other goodies.

A fascinating marketing tactic from Linksys

Linksys Parental Controls -- More Information

Interesting approach to selling more cheap Linksys wifi routers. To be honest this is a terrific idea especially if you simply wish to restrict access to one or more sites and monitor use... I can see a solution like this growing with the child as they go from 3 yrs old to 18 yrs old as their needs change. If anyone has experience with this new software product from Linksys please comment below.

I am sure there are competitive offerings but obviously consumer grade, network level firewalls and proxies can be quite tricky to setup. Has Linksys come up with a simple approach to do this? Inquiring minds want to know. This appears to be a captive portal product with basic functionality and effectively does a decent job of solving the problem of weak security in wifi. Just set up this software and ensure anyone using your hotspot has to 'login' just like in your favorite starbucks.... Hmmm....

And oh yah one more thing -- are Linksys parental control logs admissable in a court of law?

You need their Wireless-G solution of course.
