This announcement lends credibility for the cell phone being the future generation device that we have all been talking about -- the all in one communication device. With the ability to go from GSM to WiFi seamlessly I can envision a way for users to gradually shift away from expensive voice only services to potentially more expensive, voice-subsidized data services. Cool.

that lets computer users make free calls to each other anywhere in the
world, are going one step farther in their bid to compete with traditional
telecom companies, releasing a new version that lets users dial regular
phones from a computer.

Another small municipality has launched WiFi to its population of 21,000 or so in California... In this case one of the city councilors convinced the others that this was a "good" thing.
